Down2tream of iit all we float
The countryside had been beautiful, once upon a time—or so he had heard, from those with far more experience dealing with the outdoor world. It was a rare occurrence to pass by one of the many campfires held by either troll or human, and not hear something about how wonderful everything used to be. Sollux thought they were all full of shit. Everything was shitty before the zombie infestation, too. Nature was nature; trees still grew, things lived and died (with a higher emphasis on both, nowadays), and everyone around him tended to give him a massive headache, undead or not. Working in private with his hives had helped to alleviate the sensation, but it seemed even there he couldn’t escape contact there either. “I need more power!”, “I need more internet!”, “Fix my computer!” Good Gog, it took every piece of willpower he possessed to not send every single nagging survivor soaring back out the way they came. Only most of them.
Which was why, on occasion, Sollux would be the first to volunteer for one of the more dangerous, solitary jobs required outside of the encampment. Time to clear his head was always necessary; knowing that his solace was done so with purpose was another bonus for him.
The mission was simple. Too many of the undead had again managed to gather around the outer perimeter of the encampment. A quick wave of bullets would do the job, but a solution without wasting firepower was highly preferred. Sollux had offered to lead them away, and deal with them in a ‘peaceful’ solution. Peaceful in this case meaning to sit in the middle of the river at one of the faster-flowing parts on a rock, psionically smashing a log on one side to create noise and attract them in, and simply wait for them to do what they did best.
Sollux watched with dulled disinterest after an hour of the process had trudged on. His shoes sat next to him as his feet dangled in the water. He wriggled his toes, enjoying the feeling of the cold water rushing through and around them. In such a way, he idly passed the time between invasions.
He glanced up at the sound of a low groan nearby. A human zombie was walking toward him, arms outstretched in his direction. Three more lumbered behind it; the stragglers after the main horde. The zombie managed to make it unsteadily up to its waste. Any moment now and…
…there it went. Swept away by the current, its arms tore into the air just before it plummeted underwater. He turned his head to watch down-stream. For a moment, the zombie’s head resurfaced…and then it went back under as it continued its voyage to the ocean. One hundred and twenty one zombies he’d watched float down the river toward the ocean now. There, one was typically to hope that they were eaten by sea-creatures. He, however, was far more fond of the idea of them simply floating there…alive, but harmless. At least until a cure was found.
Or until they were all eaten. He sighed to himself, laying upon the rock and staring into the nights’ sky as he heard another zombie swept away. He allowed himself a low chuckle—he could just imagine some ornery sea-troll at the base where the river met the ocean, screeching over the sudden influx of floating zombies.

Having lived in a tree her entire life, this would likely not come as a surprise to anyone; as a bonus, it was a quite effective way to get away from the undead horde plaguing her and her surroundings.
Others, of course, had their own ways of dealing with the stinky critters, ways just as set in their rearings as her scaling habits were in hers. The sea trolls used the ocean to get away, or at least the highblood she knew best; the ones that didn't live on boats resorted to weaponry and agility, either troll or human. Then, last but not least, were the psychics. Not the telepaths, like her and Vriska, but the telekinetics, the ones who could basically pick up and toss anything they liked with a thought. Few as they were in this encampment, they were valuable, so it struck her as just this side of odd that one of them was currently lounging on a rock in the middle of the river.
Terezi crawled out on a thickish limb, wrapping her legs around it as it bent under her weight, allowing her to get closer to the mango-blooded boy beneath her, the one with the mismatched eyes. Folding her arms on the branch and laying flat on it, making herself comfortable, she smiled down at him, tilting her head. "3v3n1n', Trop1c4llo. Wh4t br1ngs you out h3r3?"

The creaking of wood first caught his attention--Sollux glanced up at the sound, and couldn't help but quirk an eyebrow at the troll crawling upon it. His first thought was that it must have been a zombie, acting as strangely as it did; but really, how many zombies could climb trees?
None, as far he knew. Or hoped.
When the other troll plopped down on the branch and spoke to him, it took only a moment for the identity to click. Who else could it possibly be, climbing in that tree as she was? Terezi Pyrope, blind troll extraordinaire. Sollux could only chuckle softly at the girls' odd position. He stopped shortly, realizing that he wasn't much better at the moment, sitting in the middle of the river and luring zombies into a quick trip downstream. Suddenly, Sollux felt quite silly. "Hey Rezii, what'2 up? He responded, lifting a hand on the back of his neck. She had put him in an odd position of needing to explain himself--something he had never been terribly proficient at.
He shrugged as he looked around them, attempting to play off the fact that he was struggling for an excuse. What was he supposed to say, 'I'm just being a gigantic tool and sending those zombies I was supposed to kill downstream'? No, certainly not. He didn't need another troll questioning his reluctance to kill them. "The 2iilence. Not haviing two deal wiith everyone a2kiing me two fiix theiir problem2. The u2ual." He said, glad he was able to respond to his friend without lying completely. "What about you? Why are you here?" He said with an amused chuckle, leaning back and crossing his legs. "Won't kk fliip hii2 2hiit when he fiind2 out you're mii22iing agaiin?"

So that was his ploy, was it? So lazy~ But then, after all, why shouldn't he be? Poor Sollux worked his tail off for the encampment. He certainly looked like he needed the rest. She almost felt bad for bothering him, but even talking with her he looked so relaxed that she didn't mind so much interrupting him. Surely someone with such a solitary lifestyle got lonely sometimes. She certainly did.
”1 l1v3 out h3r3, s1lly,” she replied, ”Or d1d you forg3t my h1v3 1s 1n th3 m1ddl3 of th3 for3st?” Not that she would blame him if he did. Terezi didn't really have that many friends, and the number of them that actually knew where she lived she could count on less than half a hand. She rolled over on her back, facing him upside down while still keeping a good hold on the branch. ”4nd h3 c4n fl1p 4ll th3 sh1t h3 w4nts to. 1 4m 4 fr33 troll! 1 w1ll com3 4nd go 4s 1 pl34s3; 4s long 4s 1 4m up 1n th3 tr33s th3 zomb13s c4n't g3t m3~” One of her trademark giggles escaped her lips and she stretched her arm down to tap Sollux lightly on the nose.
”1'm gl4d you could g3t 4w4y, though. You d3s3rv3 4 br34k, Trop1c4llo.” Everyone at the encampment was always so selfish. Why couldn't they just do things on their own?

Sollux certainly had to admit that Terezi’s friendly company was a welcome relief from the usual badgering that went along with most social interactions he was forced into since joining the encampment. Casual conversation made for a great distraction from menial, uninteresting jobs for that matter. With a casual flick of his wrist, he sent the same rock up and then back down, shaking the ground and admitting a loud noise. Lurkers for miles would be able to hear the sound and come investigate—supposing they didn’t get lost, anyways. Sollux wasn’t entirely certain how well their sense of navigation worked.
He even smiled at her comment after releasing his hold on the rock, somehow imagining the other ornery troll stamping around camp looking for her and trying to (unsuccessfully) reach her on Trollian. “ii remember. Iit’2 ju2t weiird seeiing anyone el2e wanderiing around out here.” He said with a shrug, lifting his legs from the water and holding them against his chest. “Mo2t troll2 ju2t want two pretend the zombiie2 don’t exii2t out2iide of tho2e wall2. They ju2t want two pretend liife ii2 normal and never 2ee another lurker iin their liive2 agaiin.” He said with a shrug, scratching at the side of his jaw. In theory, he couldn’t really blame them—most nights he wished he could just close his eyes and truly believe that they hadn’t all been through inexplicable horrors.
At the very least, such moments such as these helped to establish some sense of normalcy. He batted at her hand, chuckling lightly. “Probably, but ju2t you watch. Ii’ll get back two camp and everything wiill have gone two 2hiit 2iince ii wa2 gone.” He rolled his eyes, even half-wishing he was joking. He knew he would get back to a line of frenzied trolls and humans all with some electronic problem. “ii could 2ay the 2ame for you, couln’t ii? The break thiing that ii2.” He asked. Though he didn’t know the nature of it, word had certainly hit him that she’d been quite busy herself. He craned his head back and looked up into the night sky. “2omtiime2 ii ju2t want two run away from all of iit agaiin, you know? Ju2t go back two the mountaiin2 and waiit for all the zombiie2 two diie, all of the war2 to blow over, and the 2elect handful of 2ane troll2 and human2 two have fiinally 2tarted a functiioniing 2ociiety.” He said, the words sounding wistful and fantastical even to himself. He chuckled, turning back to her. “But that’2 ju2t 2tupiid.

It took her a moment to readjust, but once she was comfortable again she grinned down at him, listening to all that he had to say. Why should they wish that the problem wasn't there, when it so blatantly was? It wasn't as if normal life for them was any better. Maybe it was just her that thought such things.
”1 don't und3rst4nd why h3 fuss3s so much ov3r m3 4nyw4y. 1'v3 l1v3d h3r3 my 3nt1r3 l1f3. 1t's not l1k3 1 c4n't t4k3 c4r3 of mys3lf.” She sighed again, hearing quite well the longing in his voice and wondering why he would ever want to go back to being truly by himself. Then again, everyone was different, and it was obvious by now that Sollux wasn't anywhere near as social a creature as she herself was. Her face fell a bit and she sighed as well, facing the stars just like he had.
”M4yb3 1 could us3 on3,” she said softly, ”but 1f 1 l3ft 3v3ryon3 1 c4r3 4bout would just 3nd up 1n 4 b1g f4t m3ss. Not to m3nt1on how worr13d 4ll of...wh4t, two p3opl3 would b3. M4yb3 thr33. 1 don't 3v3n know.” Her thoughts wandered, as they tended to do so often these days, towards her matesprit. Maybe both of them should run away, leave this horrible prejudiced place. Where would they go, though? Some other even more horrible place where nobody knew them and everyone would hate them even more? Making sure she wasn't facing him, Terezi took her glasses off and ran a hand down her face. “1 b3t w4y mor3 th4n th4t would m1ss you 1f you l3ft, though. 4t l34st you'r3 us3ful. 1'm just 4ll up 1n 3v3rybody's w4y.” Putting her glasses back on, she turned down to face him once again, smiling sadly. “4nd 1t's not stup1d, Trop1c4llo. 1t's pr3tty much th3 b3st w1sh 3v3r.”
